Afro Celt Sound System

World music fusion takes fluid forms in the 21st century, from live collaborations and pop hits to club anthems, and music collective Afro Celt Sound System have been hugely instrumental in fuelling that far-reaching approach. For over 20 years, ACSS have found kindred spirits from around the world and forged a reputation for exhilarating shows, compiling an accomplished catalogue of albums. 2016 sees the band continue their adventures on the road and in the studio with their first recording for a decade, The Source.

The latest line-up assembled by Simon Emmerson includes long time band members kora and balafon virtuoso N’Faly Kouyate and dhol master Johnny Kalsi. They also welcome some newcomers to the family, including the gritty, witty rhymes of Gaelic rapper, musician and language activist Griogair and the hauntingly soulful delivery of Armagh-born vocalist and flautist Riognach Connolly.

The new album’s characteristic energy translates seamlessly into ACSS’ latest live show and they kicked off 2016 with a rapturously received sold-out Celtic Connections festival appearance in January. This collective has come a long way in the last 20 years, but they’re still constantly taking their audience to new undiscovered places.

“Multiculturalism isn’t on our agenda; it’s our life.” Simon Emmerson, Afro Celt Sound System.
